Frequently asked questions

Parking and the road to Innerdalen

  • You park at Nerdal parking (Innerdalen parking) . From there it is about 3.5 km to walk to Renndølsetra along a gravel road (one hour walk).

  • Parking at Nerdal costs NOK 75 per day . The price per day is slightly lower if you park for several days.

  • No, there are no charging facilities at Nerdal parking. The nearest charging stations are at Sunndalsøra , about 20 minutes away by car.

  • No. Innerdalen is a protected landscape area, and the valley should be as car-free as possible. Road traffic is only permitted for farm operations and transportation to the tourist cabins. All guests must walk or cycle in from the parking lot.

  • Most people take about an hour from Nerdal parking to Renndølsetra at a normal walking pace. It is a gravel road, so you can walk in normal shoes and clothes.

  • Yes, it is possible to cycle or use a stroller. Be aware that the road has a couple of very steep hills. With a stroller it can be difficult, but many people choose to take one so that the children have a good place to sleep. Remember to be considerate of pedestrians, especially on the hills.

Practical information

  • We usually have a season from June to August, but exact dates may vary. See our separate page for opening hours.

  • We prefer that you pay by card or Vipps.

  • There is very poor or no mobile phone coverage down in the valley itself. On the way up to Innerdalstårnet there is coverage for periods, but you should not rely on your mobile phone to work.

  • Yes, at Renndølsetra we have WiFi available for our guests.

  • Yes, we rent out climbing helmets for the trip up Innerdalstårnet. You do not need to book in advance, but larger groups should call us so that we can reserve enough helmets.

  • No, there is usually plenty of room for everyone. You must still check in at Renndølsetra to register and pay for the tent site. More about the tent site can be found here.

Safety and rules

  • Movements on the mountainside have slowed down considerably, and there is no immediate danger of landslides. NVE is monitoring the situation, but is no longer monitoring daily. There are no trails in the exposed area, and we advise against traffic there. Any landslide will not reach the road, the lake, or the houses in the valley.

  • There is no general ban on drones in the conservation area, but permission from landowners is always required. Contact us at Renndølsetra to clarify this. It is strictly forbidden to fly around the houses on the setra or at Innerdalstårnet, as this is very disturbing to people and animals.

Dog in Innerdalen

  • Yes. There is absolute leash enforcement in the entire area. Every year sheep are killed because dogs get loose or get tired. This leads to great suffering for the animals and losses for the farmer. Keep your dog on a short leash!

  • Yes, but we only have two rooms where dogs are allowed. These must be booked in advance.

  • Yes, but you have to be extra careful. There are both cows and sheep grazing right next to the tent site. You have to keep your dog on a leash and pick up after him, as others will be camping in the same spot and animals are grazing there.

  • No. The last part towards the top is too steep for dogs. We often see dogs panicking, which can create dangerous situations for both the dog and other hikers.

You also can't tie your dog up in the crevice. It blocks the path for others, including those who are afraid of dogs, and there is no water for the dog up there.
